Boo! A Halloween running playlist: 10-29-2010

running playlist

This weekend is Halloween in the USA, a holiday where kids are encouraged to take candies from strangers and adults dress up in skimpy clothing…

But seriously though, it’s a fun holiday and if you eat too much candy, you’ll need to run it off, so I put together a running playlist inspired by Halloween songs.
This spooky running playlist isn’t a very long one, so you’ll have time to get back to your trick or treat adventures in no time.

The running playlist is 38:14 minutes long with an average BPM of 144, so it’s pretty fast. I also tried to avoid the usual suspects for this kind of a playlist like the “Adams Family” and other overused songs for this holiday although I couldn’t avoid some.

10K running playlist of the week: 10-28-2010

It’s Thursday and once again it’s time for your 10k running playlist of the week.

This week, I have to say that I’m not in a very happy mood. As some of you might know, I’m training for the Philadelphia Marathon, and recently, I pushed myself too far while training and hurt my knee… I’m pretty much off running for now, and I’m stretching and massaging my legs like crazy with hope that I can at least run in a few weeks. I’ve given up on a hitting a good time.

So this week, I decided to create a more cautious running playlist.

Starting with 3 slow songs, which will act as a good warm up, the list builds up slowly and hits 180+ BPM at the end. Personally, I will pass on the end part of the list and cap my list at 150BPM so I don’t hurt myself again.

The average BPM of this list is 132BPM and it is 1:22 hours long so if you are using it for a 10k, you will have to run at most at 13:11 min/mile.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 10-27-2010

running playlist

Yesterday, I posted that I was in running playlist heaven since Taylor Swift had 5 songs in the top 10 list on iTunes. Surprisingly, the Amazon.com customers didn’t see the release of her new album as such a momentous occasion and are still sticking with the same top 10 list as they have kept more or less the same for over 5 weeks.

This is actually an interesting lesson in marketing since it looks like iTunes customers are probably younger and more diverse in their musical taste and Amazon customers are less influenced by albums targeted at a younger market and buy more or less what keeps playing in the top 20 lists on the radio.

Anyway…

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 10-26-2010

Today I’m in running playlist heaven!

As some of you might know, I’m a big fan of Taylor Swift’s music (no, I’m not a 12 year old girl…)

This week in the iTunes top 10 we have not one, not two but FIVE(!!!) songs by Taylor Swift! OMG!

These songs are from her new album Speak Now, and have a slightly more “grown up” theme than her previous work, even though they are still written from a teenager/very young woman’s point of view (which Taylor Swift is…)

Ok, enough gushing! Two songs from her list in the top 10 are running playlist worthy, The Story Of Us andBetter Than Revenge.

I’ve bolded the songs that would be a good addition to a running playlist.

Shake your groove thing: 70′s running playlist of the week: 10-22-2010

What do bell bottoms, mood rings, disco and Saturday Night Fever have in common? That’s right, they are all cultural icons of the 70′s.

When I think about the 70′s I always remember the immortal phrase spoken by one of the great thinkers of the time: “Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah”. Ahh, that brings back memories…

The 70s music definitely had its charm, and while Disco did die with that decade, it will always live on in our hearts and iPods and now, it can also be part of our running playlist.

Per request of one of my readers, AnaIsabel, I put together a list of some great songs from the 70′s that would be great for a running playlist.

The list below is 1:15 hours, and has an average BPM of 131, so it will allow you to run at a good tempo.

5K running playlist of the week: 10-21-2010 - split run

This week’s 5K list is a split running playlist. What this means is that for the first half of the run, you’ll be running relatively slowly with slower music at an average bpm of 112 BPM. Once the first half is done, the BPM picks up and your run gets much faster. The music goes from 112 average BPM to 157 average BPM, with a high at 172 BPM.

This list is also very fast. It’s only 35 minutes long and if you want your run to last for the duration of the list, you’ll have to run at a pace of 11:19 min/mile, which is not too slow at all.

You can also break this list apart and use the slow songs for a warm up if you’d like at the beginning of your own running playlist.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 10-20-2010

running playlist

Our friends at Amazon are still very stable and consistent in their music preferences.
If you built a running playlist out of these songs last week, or the week before that, you can still keep it as is, since the top 10 list on amazon only added one new song (Bottoms Up) which is a slow song at 73 BPM so not really good for running to.

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 10-19-2010

This week, we have three new songs in the iTunes top 10 list but only one of them (Raise Your Glass (Explicit Version)) is good for a running playlist.

We also still have Like A G6 number 1, that’s 3 weeks in a row!

Taylor Swift switched out Speak Now with Back to December, which is a nice song, but very slow in terms of BPM, so not really good for a running playlist.

For some reason, we also have two drinking songs in this week’s list, Bottoms Up and Raise Your Glass (Explicit Version), so I guess it’s time for a post run cocktail…

I’ve bolded the songs that would be a good addition to a running playlist.

Running Playlist of the week: 10-15-2010: A Glee running playlist!

I promised you a running playlist surprise this week and here it is!

If you haven’t heard of the TV show Glee (which could only happen if you live under a rock or have just now woken up from a coma – and if that’s the case, thanks for making this site the first one you visit :) , it is one of the most popular TV shows these days.

The music from Glee already broke the Beatles’ record for the number of hits on the top of the charts (even though these are only cover versions). As much as I hate to admit it (again, I’m not a 12 year old girl), I do like the show. The story lately is getting looser and looser and barely makes sense anymore (what contest are they trying to win this year?) but it does work with the songs and their music is very up-beat and well performed in most cases.

That’s why I decided to create a running playlist entirely out of Glee songs.

It actually turned out quite good with an average BPM of 127, and at almost 45 minutes (without commercials…:) it will give you a good workout.

10K running playlist of the week: 10-14-2010

running playlist

It’s Thursday and once again it’s time for your 10k running playlist of the week.

I’ve been very hard on you over the last few weeks with very fast high BPM running playlist, so I thought I’d go easy on you this week.

This 10k playlist is very relaxed, at 118 average BPM and is 1:33 hours long so if you are using it for a 10k, you will have to run at most at 15.02 min/mile, which isn’t very fast.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 10-13-2010

It seems like Amazon customers are very consistent in their music preferences. If you built a running playlist out of these songs, you can still keep it as is, since the top 10 list on amazon has not had more than 1 new song in the past 3 weeks and all that really changed was songs moving up and down the list.

At least Katy Perry is still out…

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 10-12-2010

Running playlist

We have two new songs in the iTunes top 10 list today. One of them (Speak Now) is great for a running playlist.

Once again, Taylor Swift has created a great piece of music with Speak Now, and we also have runaway coming in at number 10, but it is a low BPM song, so not great for a running playlist.

I’ve bolded the songs that would be a good addition to a running playlist.

Mini Connected app will change music to suit driving

Had to share this because it's so ridiculous. Apparently, someone in the mini company is also a runner and they decided that if an app that changes bpm while you run is a good thing, then why not do it for a car. Sounds very safe to me... I can just see myself cruising to high powered music and pushing the car as fast as it can go to match my bpm... I'm also wondering how you translate BPM to RPM. like you do with steps in running?

source: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/07/mini-connected-app-will-change-music-to-suit-driving/

If you've used one of the athletic apps for the iPhone, you're probably familiar with the feature that matches the music to your workout. You run faster, the system ups the BPM. Cycle slower and the tempo drops. Miniwants to do something similar with the Mini Connected system, and that's just the tip of the interactive infotainment iceberg.

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: 10-08-2010: Hip Hop!

It’s Friday again, and time for the running playlist of the week.

This week’s list was inspired by one of my twitter followers, @ChrisShort, who requested a hip hop playlist.

Hip Hop is a difficult genre for a running playlist because it is usually slower in terms of BPM than most genres. That said, there are a lot of fast BPM songs in Hip Hop and even many of the slow ones are power songs that can motivate you to go faster and longer.

The list below starts relatively slow with some motivational songs, and then gets faster. It is slightly longer than 1 hour, (1:06:20 if you want to be precise) and will get you all pumped up when you run to it.

Stay tuned next week, I have a special surprise.

Running Playlist: 5K Playlist of the week: 10-07-2010

running playlist

This week’s 5k running playlist is designed to be fast an furious filled with high power songs to get you pumped the whole way to the finish line.

The list starts out with a 156 BPM song, so make sure you warm up before you start the run becasue this song will get your runing fast right out the gate.

The running playlist builds up until the end with a 189(!) BPM song.

This running playlist is 45:35 minutes long, so you’ll need to keep a pace of 14.40 min/mile. Not an exceptionally fast pace, but not slow either, so this list is not for beginners.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 10-06-2010

running playlist

This week’s amazon top 10 list makes me very happy…
It is finally Kary Perry free, so there is still hope for the civilized world of music. We also have a new entrant in the number 1 spot My Best Theory, which comes in at 120 BPM and is a good song for a running playlist.

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 10-05-2010

running playlist

This week’s iTunes top 10 list includes one new song. Like A G6 moved up this week in this week’s iTunes top 10 to the number 1 position.
The new song in the list is Gonerrhea [Explicit], coming in at number 10. Talk about filthy lyrics, WOW! I mean, it’s not even sexually explicit, just really filthy… but i’m not the one to judge and if iTunes decided it can be there, then I will defer to their judgment on this.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that would make a good addition to a running playlist.

How to get free songs and mp3 downloads legally for your running playlist

How would you like to get hundreds of free mp3 songs, legally and without having to pay any monthly fee? I’m not talking about streaming from the web, I’m talking about actually downloading these songs for your personal use for free.

I’m not talking about some backwoods bands that no one’s ever heard of either, I’m talking about bands and artists like John Legend, Beyoncé, Death Cab For Cutie, Alice Cooper and many others (there are also less familiar artists and bands there of course…)

I’ve counted over 2000 free songs available for download.

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: Dance!

New month, new weekend and of course, a new running playlist of the week. Early this week, one of our readers, Alex, asked for a Dance based playlist.

I do take requests, so I put this dance and electronic music based playlist together.

As usual, we start with low BPM songs to warm up, and then start to pick up. Note that even the slow start opens at 130 BPM, so it’s still pretty upbeat.

This dance running playlist is actually quite fun to run with and keeps you pumped for the whole run. It’s 1:01 hours long, so it will give you a good workout. Watch out towards the end because it jumps from 145 to 169 and then 174 BPM so you might feel the urge to really speed up.

Stay tuned for next week when the running playlist of the week will be all Hip-Hop!
