A Holly Jolly Running Playlist for Christmas with a gift for you

running playlist

Christmas is in the air and everywhere you can hear Christmas music playing, so of course, you can expect a Christmas running playlist from me as well.

I tried to keep this running playlist interesting and included some traditional holiday songs, some new songs and some of the funny holiday songs.

I wanted to give some back to my readers, so I included some free songs on this running playlist (free on amazon – can change anytime at their discretion) but you’ll have to “unwrap” them by going to amazon and checking which ones are free for yourself… :)

This playlist is 40 minutes long, and averages out at 144 BPM.

Have a great Christmas and a Happy new year and I’ll see you after my vacation

10k Running Playlist of the week: 12-23-2010

Another Thursday, another 10k running playlist. This one is a slower one, since it’s holiday season and I’m sure we’re all full of “holiday cheer” and need some time to recuperate.

This running playlist is more rock focused than usual, but I threw in a bunch of different other genres to keep it interesting.

Today’s running playlist is 1:20 minutes long, so if you are planning to use it for a 10k run, you’ll need to keep a pace of 13:02 min/mile. This running playlist averages at 121 BPM, so not too tough.

You Stream Music, Pandora Streams Your Info to Advertisers: Capiche?

Source: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/amplifier/39723/you-stream-music-pandora-streams-your-info-to-advertisers-capiche/

Online radio network Pandora provides users with highly curated playlists based on the Music Genome Project, an analysis of more than 400 attributes of a song that make it appealing to your specific ear taste buds. The cost of this pretty incredible service for most folks: nothing at all. Well, nothing at all if you don't consider quietly sharing some of your web habits with advertisers a "cost."

While you're paying zilch to listen to Led Zeppelin Radio, someone is footing the royalty bill -- Pandora, duh. As the service explains in itsFrequently Asked Questions, it collects some personal information from users so it can help its advertisers -- who support the service by paying Pandora cash money -- target consumers that will be useful to them. The explanation for why you tell Pandora your age and gender: "The free version of Pandora is mostly supported by advertisements, and we want to be able to show the most relevant ads to our listeners."

Nothing is relly free on the internet...

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 12-21-2010: Funniest song of the year

running playlist

Today’s iTunes top 10 list features several new songs. Unfortunately, none of them are really high in BPM so they are not great for a running playlist.
6 Foot 7 Foot comes in at number 1, and then we have a couple more, Coming Home and I Just Had Sex [Explicit]closing the bottom of the list.

When I first saw the I Just Had Sex [Explicit] title, I thought “Wow, this looks like a pretty explicit song”, I then listened to the lyrics, and I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but this song probably qualifies as the funniest song for 2010. I’m assuming the target market for this song are people with the sense of humor of a 13 year old boy, so pretty much every male on the planet…

With Lyrics like ”I cried the whole time – Doesn’t matter – Had sex” and “It was the best 30 seconds of my life”, you gotta laugh…

Anyway, as usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist

Another Fast 5k Running Playlist: 12-16-2010

Last week’s fast 5k running playlist got some good feedback, so I decided to post another one this week.

I did tweak the average BPM on this, so not to kill you, since last week’s running playlist was a bit fast at 174. This week’s running playlist’s average BPM is down to the 130′s range again and I topped it off at 155.
This list is 30 minutes long, so if you want to run a 5k using it, you’ll have to keep a pace of 9:40 min/mile.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 12-14-2010

Only two weeks to go until Christmas, and surprisingly, there are no new holiday singles in the iTunes top 10. This week, the iTunes top 10 list is almost identical to last week’s list, except for That’s All She Wrote (Feat. Eminem) [Explicit], which has a low BPM and is not good for a running playlist.

On the other hand, the one hour long commercial, sorry, i meant “episode” of Glee for Christmas worked, and the Glee Christmas album has been on the top 10 albums since the show aired. Good for them… Hopefully the story line for that show gets better soon, because it’s starting to look like one of those infomercials for music compilations.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

A winter running playlist - songs with the word "Hot" playlist of the week

Wow, it’s only mid-December and it’s already way below freezing here (last night it was 19 degrees (-7 Celsius), brrrr….). Running can get hard in this kind of weather, so I decided to put together a running playlist that will help keep us warm, at least in our minds, until the weather heats up a bit.

All the songs in this running playlist include the word “hot” in their title, so when you run with this list, you’ll be able to think of the warm fire or heater waiting for you when you get home.
I have a feeling that it will get even colder here over the next few months, so I might need to assemble a running playlist with the word “hotter” or something in it to keep warmer.

This running playlist is short, only 41 minutes long, and averages at 130 BPM, so finish your run up quickly and stay warm.

Fast 5k Running Playlist: 12-09-2010

running playlist

Today’s 5k running playlist is a very fast one. It’s cold outside in most of the northern hemisphere, and any run outside needs to be done fast so you can get back inside and warm up.

This 5k running playlist is 31 minutes long, meaning that if you want to use it for a 5k run, you’ll have to keep a pace of 10:03 min/mile. This isn’t terribly fast, but not too slow either, so make sure you warm up well before you run.
The average BPM of this list is 174 beats per minute. This is the fastest playlist I’ve ever posted, please be careful when you run with this.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 12-07-2010

running playlist

One of my year’s end resolutions (besides building a legendary running playlist) is to keep things positive and try not to say bad things about people. I was doing pretty well with this until I saw Katy Perry’s gratuitous appearance on the Simpsons this Sunday. I’m not sure why she was there or what she added to the show and that would be fine if she would have acted well, but her appearance was soooooo awkward, I was almost embarrassed for her.

Anyway, that’s the last bad thing I’m going to say about Katy Perry this year unless she really pulls another ridiculous performance like the one on Sunday and then I’ll have to comment on it.
Back to the iTunes top 10.

It looks like my theory about Glee continuously being in the top 10 was wrong. They did have some songs in the iTunes top 10 for a couple of days after the show, but then they dropped out. This week, we have two new entrants into the iTunes top 10, Black And YellowChristmas Lights. Unfortunately, these songs have a low BPM so they aren’t suitable for a running playlist.

One more interesting thing to note about this week’s top 10 is that it features our first Christmas song for this year Christmas Lights.
I do love Christmas music, and I try to avoid malls and easy listening radio to keep myself from an overdose this time of year, so I’m looking forward to seeing what else we’ll get to hear this holiday season.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

Running Playlist AudioFuel Review

Running playlist

I recently discovered a great new running playlist and music related service I thought I’d share.
The service is called AudioFuel (http://www.audiofuel.co.uk), and they provide a pre-recorded full lenght BPM optimized workout, that not only gives you music with the correct BPM for your workout, but also provides you with audio coaching and motivation during the workout.

Audio Fuel’s music is basically electronic music and since they create their own music, they can pinpoint the exact BPM that you need to be at depending on the workout you are planning.

For a while now, I’ve been looking for a good interval training program and AudioFuel has a bunch of those so i decided to give it a try.
First, I chose a program called, “Yelling Performance 3 Step Intervals 180 MAX”. I should have known that this would be a tough one just because it had the word “yelling” in the title (it’s actually the name of the coach recorded on the program, not really someone yelling at you but still…).
This program was too much for me, it started out just fine, with a good warm-up, but then the BPMs went up, and by the 2nd time they went to 180, I was completely wiped out.

This program is definitely not for beginners, but if you are a seasoned runner looking for a really good workout, this one is for you. I’m thinking it would be a good program for spinning as well, but I think AudioFuel has a separate section for that.

Next, I decided to go easy on myself, and tried a program called “Run Easy Vol 1_ The First Hour Continuous DJ Mix”, much better…

8 days of running playlist, Hanuka/Hanukkah/Chanukah edition playlist of the week

running playlist

Hanukkah (how do you spell this?) is upon us (it actually started a few days ago if I’m not mistaken) and I decided I wanted to assemble the finest songs for this holiday and create a running playlist for my Jewish friends. The problem is, that there are very few quality songs that can be used in a running playlist (and really, how much do you want to hear about dreidels while you are running… ;)

So I went out to seek advice from the wisest Jews of the land, and found my answer in the lyrics of Adam Sandler’s famous Hanukah song:

Chanukah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights

So I decided to focus on the festival of lights part, and created a running playlist made up entirely of songs with the word “light” in them.

I also couldn’t help but include some traditional and non-traditional Hanukah songs in case you really want to hear a song about playing with your dreidel… (this last sentence sounds a bit like a bad euphemism, but I’ll let it go).

This playlist is 1:10 hours long, so you can work off some of the calories from those latkes you had last night.

Let this running playlist light your holiday and your heart. Happy Chanukah to my Jewish friends

10k Running Playlist of the week

It’s getting colder and colder here in the northeast, and morning temperatures are falling below freezing early in the morning when I usually run.
I remember reading somewhere that when you run in cold weather you tend to run faster, which is great, because if it keeps getting colder this way, I’m going to break some world records very soon… :)

This 10k running playlist has a lot of musical diversity, some oldies, some glee, and even a dance song, so it will definitely keep your ears and mind engaged with the different musical styles. I also made sure that you start slow with a few songs for a warm up and then pick up with the BPM up to 162 BPM.

This running playlist is 1:21 hours long, so if you want to use it for a 10k run and use the whole list, you’ll need to keep a pace of 13:04 mile/min. The average BPM for this list is 132 beats per minute.

Hot New Albums Due Dec. 7

I heard the new Tron movie is going to be awesome, can't wait to see it!

Daft Punk

"Tron Legacy" soundtrack

So for their highest-profile project to date, you might've expected Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo to flex the party-starting flair they showed iff on "One More time" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." No dice. This soundtrack to Walt Disney Pictures' "Tron" sequel is a determinedly moody affair, longer on minor-key strings and hushed synth burbles than on Daft Punk's revered throbbing beats. More Info..

From the aptly named opener "Some Chords" to the time-stopping dubstep ballad "Raise Your Weapon" (featuring Picture Book singer Greta Svabo Bech), the collection employs the Deadmau5 sound in fresh ways, with more energy and more nuance -- and three vocal tracks, the most of any previous albums. If his earlier material relished in the joy of sound, these tracks explore something deeper and more emotional. More Info..

Strip Me

"The album's called 'Strip Me' because it's all about stripping it down to who we are as humans," the British-born songstress recently told Billboard.com. "We're united about our needs, our desires and our pain, all the different things we go through together. 'Strip Me' felt like it explains what the songs are about more than any other title I could think of. So it has a double meaning, but I think people kind of know me enough to know what I mean by it." More Info..

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 11-30-2010

running playlist

Welcome back to a new week and a new running playlist analysis of the iTunes top 10. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break and had good runs. I’m still adjusting to living in the northeast and the snow on Thanksgiving Day didn’t help, but back to the music…

My theory on Glee being in the top 10 every week isn’t really panning out like I thought it would. Honestly, I can’t really remember any great songs from last week’s episode, so maybe it’s a quality thing.

This week, we’re back to our usual top 10 list, with Bottoms Up back in the top 10 list and no Glee related music.

Katy Perry is still number 1 and if she keeps playing as much as she is now on the radio, it’ll be a long run in that position, but one can always hope for a miracle, right?

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

Gobble Gobble… a 5k running playlist for the thanksgiving turkey trot

turkey trot - running playlist

It’s Thanksgiving in the US tomorrow, and millions of runners are planning to run a 5k turkey trot, so it’s only fair to post a 5k running playlist for a turkey trot today.

Since I’m on vacation tomorrow, I decided to combine the playlist of the week post and the event playlist (5k, 10k, etc…) into a single post and have a themed playlist for the upcoming turkey trot.

This list is not very fast, but not too bad, at 134 average BPM, and it’s 1:02 hour long (pace to run a 5k will be almost 20 minute/mile, so you can walk to this list if you want to run the full length) , so you’ll have plenty of time to finish up your turkey trot and go home to stuff your face with holiday delights.

On a more personal note, I remember running a turkey trot last year in Houston, where it was nice and sunny and I could run in shorts. It’s 43 degrees up in the Philadelphia area today, so I can’t really see myself running anywhere without adequate long clothing for protection…

Anyway…

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 11-23-2010

running playlist

This week’s iTunes top 10 list has pretty much the same songs we featured last week on running playlist except for a couple of changes:

First, we have an new entry by Bruno Mars, the pretty violent display of affection titled Grenade, and second, a new song from last week’s episode of Glee, Forget You.

Forget You actually indicates what could be a start of an interesting trend in music where we see a song from a TV show in the iTunes top 10 list every week. I’m going to track this and see if tonight’s episode leads to the same results.

I’m not saying anything about Katy Perry being at number 1….

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

Directly from Texas – a country running playlist: 11-19-2010

I spent some time in Houston, Texas last week for work and did some running while I was down there. The weather was awesome and I ran in shorts and short sleeves most of the time. I was also inspired by my visit to do a country only running playlist. I used to live in Houston, and always loved country music, and while not all people in Texas are cowboys, ride horses and listen to country music all the time (in fact, Houston is very diverse and has the best international food I’ve ever had), it’s definitely a more popular genre than up north.

This list is a bit longer than one hour (1:08 to be exact) and averages out at 139 BPM, so it would give you a good pace for a workout, so just put on your headphones, and lose yourself in the beautiful music of the south while you run (don’t forget to pay attention to your surroundings and all the other things you need to do to stay safe… :)

10K running playlist of the week: 11-18-2010

running playlist

Last time, I mentioned a nagging injury that forced me to slow down and so I made a slow 10K running playlist. I realized that just because I’m hurting, I shouldn’t force you all to run slowly, so this week, the 10k running playlist is faster.

I started it out at 126 BPM, so make sure you warm up before your run it. This 10k running playlist runs at 148 average BPM and is 1:20 hours long, so if you want to run a 10k with it, you’ll need to keep a pace of at least 13 min/mile if you want to use it. You can of course clip it to match your pace or add songs if you are slower.

It’s Official: The Beatles Now on iTunes

source:http://mashable.com/2010/11/16/the-beatles-itunes-2/

The Beatles have finally landed in iTunes, following years of dispute between Apple and the iconic band’s rights holders and about 24 hours of rampant speculation about what the technology giant would be announcing following cryptic messages posted to the company’s website on Monday.

In case you missed the news, you can finally get Beatles music on iTunes. I might do a running playlist that is entirly made out of Beatles songs at some point, just a thought.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 11-16-2010

running playlist

You might have noticed the lack of activity on this running playlist site. This is because I was travelling for work and visited Houston, TX for the week.
More on that later this week, but now, back to business…

This week’s iTunes top 10 delivers some pretty good songs for a running playlist. There’s a new Black Eyed Peas single, The Time (Dirty Bit), which like most of their songs, will no doubt be a hit at spinning classes, andTeenage Dream (Glee Cast Version) is also in the top 10 this week (Did you catch the last episode of Glee last week? it was one of the best!).

Katy Perry has another one in the top 10, Firework, which will no doubt be there for a while given how much it’s being played on the radio, but I’ve accepted the fact that she is around so I won’t rant about that too much.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

Back to the future - an 80s running playlist: 11-06-2010

I know, it’s Saturday today and I’m a day late with the running playlist of the week.
The reason I’m late is that yesterday, I went to NYC to attend the Born to Run “Cabaret” event.

Anyway, it was great and I’m back now to share with you the 80′s running playlist of the week!

The 80s was a great decade for music. I don’t think there will ever be a market for 90s cover bands or god forbid cover bands for the 2000′s and 2010′s (unless you include the TV show Glee in this and then all bets are off…) but 80s cover bands and 80s music is alive and well in our hearts and ears.
There were a ton of great songs I could have added to this list, and I might do a second post of an 80s running playlist some time in the future, but I tried to pick some interesting songs that we all know and love with a good BPM for a running playlist.

This list is 1:02 hours long, so it will give you plenty of time to have fun and reminisce about the good old 80s.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 11-02-2010

I guess heaven can’t last forever… Last week on running playlist, I was very excited about seeing 5 Taylor swift songs in the top 10 list on iTunes. I knew this couldn’t last forever and I was right. We’re back to normal this week with some of the songs we’ve seen before in the top 10 list.

There are three new entrants to the list, We R Who We RFirework, and What’s My Name?, and the first 2 are pretty good for a running playlist.

Personally, I still think Ke$ha is still riding the success of Tick Tok because her new song isn’t that great, but that’s just my opinion.

Boo! A Halloween running playlist: 10-29-2010

running playlist

This weekend is Halloween in the USA, a holiday where kids are encouraged to take candies from strangers and adults dress up in skimpy clothing…

But seriously though, it’s a fun holiday and if you eat too much candy, you’ll need to run it off, so I put together a running playlist inspired by Halloween songs.
This spooky running playlist isn’t a very long one, so you’ll have time to get back to your trick or treat adventures in no time.

The running playlist is 38:14 minutes long with an average BPM of 144, so it’s pretty fast. I also tried to avoid the usual suspects for this kind of a playlist like the “Adams Family” and other overused songs for this holiday although I couldn’t avoid some.

10K running playlist of the week: 10-28-2010

It’s Thursday and once again it’s time for your 10k running playlist of the week.

This week, I have to say that I’m not in a very happy mood. As some of you might know, I’m training for the Philadelphia Marathon, and recently, I pushed myself too far while training and hurt my knee… I’m pretty much off running for now, and I’m stretching and massaging my legs like crazy with hope that I can at least run in a few weeks. I’ve given up on a hitting a good time.

So this week, I decided to create a more cautious running playlist.

Starting with 3 slow songs, which will act as a good warm up, the list builds up slowly and hits 180+ BPM at the end. Personally, I will pass on the end part of the list and cap my list at 150BPM so I don’t hurt myself again.

The average BPM of this list is 132BPM and it is 1:22 hours long so if you are using it for a 10k, you will have to run at most at 13:11 min/mile.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 10-27-2010

running playlist

Yesterday, I posted that I was in running playlist heaven since Taylor Swift had 5 songs in the top 10 list on iTunes. Surprisingly, the Amazon.com customers didn’t see the release of her new album as such a momentous occasion and are still sticking with the same top 10 list as they have kept more or less the same for over 5 weeks.

This is actually an interesting lesson in marketing since it looks like iTunes customers are probably younger and more diverse in their musical taste and Amazon customers are less influenced by albums targeted at a younger market and buy more or less what keeps playing in the top 20 lists on the radio.

Anyway…

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.
