It’s Thursday again and it’s time for a race running playlist. This week, we’ll talk about a half marathon! For me, a half marathon is about going long and slow. I’m not an elite athlete, so I don’t have any delusions about winning the run, all I want to do is run it well, with a good time and not kill myself trying. As such, the half marathon playlist is designed to keep the BPM in a lower range of under 140. I also built in some cycle time so you can build up until about half of the run, then rest a bit and then start to go faster again until the end. I also made sure the list is very diverse, since you’re going to be listening to for a long time. This running playlist is 2:51 hours long so if you are using it for a half marathon, you will have to run at most at 12.45 min/mile average pace, which isn’t very fast, but it’s not too slow either. If you are like me, you will also be pausing the music for a bit while you run, I do like turning the music off somewhere mid run to get a feel of the crowds and the world around me. Then I turn it back on, so that should add give you some more running time if you are slower than the above pace. click here to get the half marathon running playlist

from cnet: On the run with the Nike+ GPS iPhone app
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20017883-233.html
Though I've always been intrigued by Apple's original Nike+ Sports Kit, I didn't want to have to buy a specific Nike shoe (I'm an Asics guy) just to use the sensor. Also, the sensor seemed like just another thing that I would lose.
Still, I liked the idea of keeping track of my runs by measuring pace and actual distance. So when Nike finallyintroduced a standalone app earlier this month, I was pleased to give Nike+ GPS a run (so to speak). Granted, competing iPhone apps like Runkeeper are available--CNET contributor Rick Broida compared four such titleslast year--but I wanted to see if Nike's+ GPS could deliver on its promises. Fortunately, I was pleased with the experience even after a couple days of use on CNET's iPhone 4. There are some missing features I was hoping to see, but the app performs well and is easy to use. I have no trouble recommending it, particularly at the affordable price of $1.99.
looks like one of the better iphone running apps...

This week the amazon top 10 is nearly unchanged. The only real change wasClub Can’t Handle Me moving back in at number 8, and it’s a good song for a running playlist. I’ve bolded the songs that would be good for a running playlist. get the list at running playlist

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 09-28-2010
This week’s iTunes top 10 BPM analysis on running playlist is surprisingly similar to last week’s list. As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that would make a good addition to a running playlist. Get the list at running playlist
We’ve had some up and down movement in the top 10, specifically, Like A G6, moving to the number 2 position, and Ke$ha coming back in with Take It Off, but there were no new songs in the list this week.

Running Playlist: 10K Playlist of the week: 09-23-2010
It’s Thursday and once again it’s time for your 10k running playlist of the week. This week I’ve made the playlist very diverse in terms of music styles. We have Pretty much everything from rock to alternative, from country to metal and even a few songs from movie soundtracks. It’s not a very slow playlist though. It’s 1:39 hours long (1:39:51 to be precise) so if you are using it for a 10k, you will have to run at most at 16.04 min/mile, which isn’t very fast, but it’s not too slow either. Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 09-22-2010
This week’s Amazon top 10 list has some good changes for your running playlist. First, I’m happy to see Katy Perry drop one more rung to number 10 with Teenage Dream. Hopefully by next week she’ll be out of the top 10. We also have some new additions to the list, Like A G6, Only Girl. Both these songs have a BPM of over 120, which makes them a good addition to a running playlist. I’ve bolded the songs that would be good for a running playlist. get the list at running playlist

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 09-21-2010
This week, we have one new entrant to the iTunes top 10 list, Like A G6. It comes in at number 3 and has a BPM of 125, which makes it a pretty good song for a running playlist. We’re also seeing that Rihanna has taken the lead this week and I have a feeling her song, Only Girl, will be there for a while. As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that would make a good addition to a running playlist. get the list at running playlist:

iPad, iPhone, iPod Get Napster App
source: http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/handheld/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227500274
Music fans can now get direct access to Napster's complete song library from their Apple mobile devices thanks to a new app that the online service has released for iTunes.
The Napster app gives users unlimited access to Napster's catalog of more than 10 million songs, for $10 per month.
"You can save songs, playlists, and albums to your iPhone to enjoy when not connected and listen while you run other apps," Napster said in a statement on its Web site. The app will also stream pre-selected playlists, let users save the 100 songs most recently played, and automatically build mixes based on their input.
Running Playlist: What kind of songs to add to a running playlist
Once you get used to running with a BPM optimized running playlist and start building your own playlists you’ll learn that it is very hard to find songs that are at 180 BPM.
The reason for this is that songs with such high BPM are too fast. There are some techno “songs” at that BPM and you can also find sites that create a looping techno 180 BPM soundtrack, but most songs, even the fastest ones, are under that.
You will also learn that there are three types of songs that you can use in a running playlist:

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: Christian Music: 09-17-2010
I am by no means a devout Christian, but I do definitely understand how spirituality and religion fit into running.
There have been many occasions when I was overwhelmed by the feeling of being inspired (“inspired” = “in spirit”), especially on early morning runs when the world is quiet and the sun is just coming up and shining a golden light on the world, and many others where I felt so low that I searched my spiritual reserves for strength.
During those times, music helped me get break through my barriers and get to the spiritual level I was searching for.
Below is a list of some inspirational songs and while you can definitely find inspiration in songs like “eye of the tiger”, these songs offer something extra.
I started the list out with an easy song to run with, i.e. low BPM, for a warm up and then started the real run.
The list is an hour long, and ends with a low BPM song to help you cool down.

Slacker taking on Rhapsody with new Premium Radio service
I am a big fan of Slacker Radio on the iOS and Android platforms and love using the cached stations feature for listening to music on the airplane when I have no connection. Tonight in New York City Slacker Radio will be revealing their new third tier offering for the serious music fan, Slacker Premium Radio.
Slacker will soon have three tiers of service:
- Slacker Basic Radio (free)
- Slacker Radio Plus ($3.99/mo with unlimited song skipping/requesting, no ads and caching)
- Slacker Premium Radio ($9.99/mo with on-demand listening)

Running Playlist: 5K Playlist of the week: 09-16-2010
Today’s 5k running playlist is fast all over. We start out with a 141 BPM song, so make sure you warm up before you run because you’ll need it. This 5k playlist is very rock focused, since I want to keep you pumped up and energized the whole way, but I did spice it up with some pop and even one country song. The overall average BPM of this list is 151 and it’s 50 minutes (50:11 to be precise) long which would take you through it if your pace is 16 min/mile so it’s enough for even the slowest runner. If you are faster, you might want to cut this running playlist down and remove some songs so you don’t miss out on the fast ending.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 09-15-2010
This weeks Amazon top 10 has some changes but not too much good for us runners. First, I’m happy to announce that “California Gurls” is finally out of the top 10. It was such an annoying song, and it’s good to see that Amazon customers finally got some good taste in music back (even though Teenage Dream is still there… but I’ll take what I can get). Come And Get It comes in at number 5. The song has a jazzy feel to it and comes in with a BPM of 117, which is not the best for a running playlist, but you could use it for recovery if you like it. We also have a new entrant at number 10, Dog Days Are Over, but that song has a BPM of 76 which is not great for a running playlist. I’ve bolded the songs that would be good for a running playlist.

New Nike App for Joggers
It was confirmed that Nike has launched a new iPhone app for joggers. The app is now available for sale in the iphone app store at the price of $1.99.
Gone are the days when we simply get up, get on that jogging shoes and head into the streets for our daily jogging routine! Nike recently released its Nike+GPS app for the iPhone. The app requires no special sensors or kits to function!
I might need to review this one too...

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 09-14-2010
This week’s iTunes top 10 list has a few new entries that would make good additions to a running playlist. Dog Days Are Over Club Can’t Handle Me comes in at number 6. Not only is it a very nice song to listen to, it also has a BPM of 129, which makes it a great song to add to a moderate intensity running playlist. Closing the list of new additions this week, comes Only Girl (In The World) As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that would make a good addition to a running playlist. Get the list at Running Playlist: comes in at number 3, but since it has a BPM of 76, it’s not really a good jogging playlist song.
, which has a BPM of 127. I’m not really a fan of this song, but it would work in a running playlist.

How to build a great running or jogging playlist
The key to building a great running playlist depends on the type of run you are trying to do, the way you run, and the type of music you like. In the examples below you will see how you can use playlists, the BPM of the music, and the order of the songs to help you run better, faster, and follow your training plan. Here are some examples:Building a great running playlist can be the key to a successful run. It could be the difference between an average or bad run and a great one. I’ve had so many runs that started out poor and then became great once I put a great music playlist on.

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: 09-10-2010
It’s Friday again and time for another running playlist of the week.
I was a bit hard on you last week with a very brutal running playlist, so i thought I’d go easy on you and give you a more relaxed playlist this week.
This week’s list doesn’t go higher than 155 BPM and the total average BPM for the whole running playlist is 137, so you’re not going to be pushing it really hard if you run to this list. This running playlist is also slightly shorter than an hour (57:21 minutes to be exact).
So take it easy this week, and come back next week for a new running playlist.

Running Playlist: 10K Playlist of the week: 09-09-2010
Today’s running playlist is designed to help you run a 10k. It’s timed at 1 hour 31 minutes, so it’s not for the slowest runners, but if your pace is faster than 14:40 min/mile it should be plenty for you. I made sure that you have a good mix of low BPM and high BPM songs in this playlist so you can cycle through running fast and slowing down when you need to rest a little bit while you are out there. Obviously, feel free to move songs around to match your running style, e.g. if you like to start very fast, then slow down a bit and then go fast again, you should move the lower BPM songs to the middle. Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 09-08-2010
Today’s amazon top 10 has one new entrant F**k You [Explicit] at number 4. It’s actually a pretty good song for a running playlist if you can put up with some foul language. I’m also glad to see Kary Perry continuing to drop lower and lower on the list. She still has 2 songs though,Teenage Dream On a sad note, Taylor Swift dropped out of the top 10 with Mine I’ve bolded the songs that would make the cut for a running playlist.and California Gurls, so hopefully in a few weeks we won’t have to hear her again.
, but hopefully it will be back very soon despite the fact it sounds just like “Love Story

Running Playlist: App review of the week: SyncStep:
I had the pleasure of communicating with Greg from SyncStep the other day and he offered to let me test the beta for his new app called… you guessed it, SyncStep. What it does: I took the app with me this weekend on my long run, and played around with it, this is what I found. Read the rest of the review at Running Playlist
Syncstep has an interesting premise. It calculates your pace while you run (I’m assuming using the iPhone accelerometer movements) and plays songs that match your pace from your iTunes library. What a great idea!

6 Reasons Runners Will Love the New iPods
This week's announcement of new iPods piqued my interest not only as a lover of shiny, new toys, but also as a runner. The two smallest versions, the new iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, are even more perfect for running (and other exercises). Here's why:
- The new Nano is tiny. — At just over 1 1/2 inches wide and just under 1 1/2 inches high, the new Nano is considerably smaller than the previous version — it's almost half the size! And it also weighs half as much as the previous version.
- The Shuffle's buttons are back.— The most recent version of the Shuffle was, in my opinion, a runner's nightmare. The design was sleek, but there were no buttons on the device itself, making it incredibly difficult to use with any other headphones other than the ones that came with the device.
From: http://www.fitsugar.com/iPod-Nano-iPod-Shuffle-Runners-10754325
Can't say I agree... I can see the accident rate for runners running into trees or parked cars (or worse, not pyaing attention and getting hit by a car) becasue they were playing with their Ipod shoot up....

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: 09-03-2010
It’s Friday again and it’s time for the running playlist of the week! I’m going to be working you hard this week with this playlist. I built this playlist to pretty much keep you running fast for the entire run with songs with a BPM of 120-150 and even a couple really fast ones at the end going up to 170. I’m a gentle and compassionate person though, so I put in a couple of lower BPM songs in the middle of this running playlist so you can catch your breath. This playlist is just a bit longer than an hour (1:02:51 to be exact), so it should give you a good workout. Get the list at Running Playlist

Running Playlist: 10K Playlist of the week: 09-02-2010
This week’s 10k running playlist is an interesting one. It has a variety of genres ranging from rock, to heavy metal, to country, to alternative, so you definitely won’t be bored on your jog. We start out slow, almost gloomy with some lower BPM music. This will allow you to start out slowly and not burn out half way through the run. After the first few songs, the BPM picks up and averages at around 135. This list is 1:46:53 long, so it’s enough for even the slowest runner (pace for this list is over 17min/mile). Get the list at Running Playlist
Toward the end of the run, the BPM average goes up to 154 and that takes you to the finish at a very fast pace.
If you are faster, you might want to cut this running playlist down and remove some songs so you don’t miss out on the fast ending.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 09-01-2010
We have a much better top 10 list this week at Amazon. Unfortunately, we still have 2 Katy Perry songs in the top 10, but they are losing ground and dropping in the rankings, so there is some hope for a Kary Perry free list sometime in the future. We also have the new Taylor Swift song, Mine Another great new entrant is Stuck Like Glue I’ve bolded the songs that would make the cut for a jogging playlist. Get the list at running playlist, at number 8, which is one of my favorite new songs and a new permanent resident in my personal running playlist.
. Unfortunatelly, it’s not a great song to add to a running playlist because of its low BPM, but it’s still a fun song to listen to.
